Best of all, the 561 uses some of the same powerful DSP algorithms as the highly acclaimed 861 Reference Surround Processor. Module enables 96kHz MHR input Module can be fitted to any existing 561 Improves digital input sound quality Adds enhanced tape functionality and a headphone output 561 now updated with THX EX Meridian 561M As part of their ongoing commitment to product development Meridian have introduced an expansion module to the 561 as an option. This can be added to any existing 561 or can now be bought factory fitted as the 561M. Additional features of the 561M are as follows: • Digital sources are routed through a jitter reduction circuit which will provide improved sound quality • Meridian High Resolution (MHR) decryption for compatibility with copy protected output from 596 and 800 DVD players • Analogue sources are available on the Tape and Room 2 outputs as well as the headphone jack • Volume on these outputs is accessible with the Function Volume command from MSR • All digital tape sources are copied directly to the digital tape output. Everything from traditional Dolby Pro Logic to the latest version of THX EX. How does THX fit in? THX Cinema has a huge amount to offer in the 5.1 era. The 561 has all the signal processing in place to comply with THX requirements for Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG. The front channels carry re-equalisation; the surrounds use a new timbre-match curve and an updated de-correlation technique. Use 561 with: 800 DVD/CD DSP8000 Speaker DSP6000 Speaker DSP5500 Speaker DSP5000 Speaker 559 Power 558 Power 556 Power D2500 Subwoofer D1500 Subwoofer 596 DVD Player 504 FM Tuner MSR Remote User Manual Data Sheet Music Formats The 561 provides Meridian’s now-famous music-processing modes including Music, Trifield, Ambisonics, SuperStereo and Music Logic as well as two-channel, stereo bypass and mono plus a Party mode. Bass management The 5.1 signal has the potential to require a 12dB increase in bass power handling in a system. Not only can the LFE (Low Frequency Effects – i.e. 0.1) channel convey 10dB more bass, but the potential exists for that to happen as well as full bass level in the other five channels. Although the Dolby Digital, MPEG and DTS encoders limit the total bass level to around +15dB, the resulting bass energy can still be incredibly demanding for even the very best systems – and equally important – may be disastrous for other, less capable, speakers. The Meridian 561 incorporates a very sophisticated series of bass protection schemes for digital surround formats. The overall amount of LFE added in can be controlled by the user. In addition, the 561 has a bass limiting function to control the total amount of bass passed to the system. As well as the overall bass protection, the 561 can monitor all eight speaker outputs. If the signal demands more bass than the speaker can supply, a proprietary psycho-acoustically optimised limiting filter momentarily and elegantly reduces the load on that speaker. This unique protection method means you can get the most out of all the speakers in the room without any fear of damage or unpleasant overload noises. Inputs and Outputs The 561 offers both analogue and direct-digital inputs and outputs. Eight digital and six analogue outputs provide feeds for any combination of Active, Passive, Digital or DSP loudspeakers in 12 different layout configurations including up to 3 different subwoofer signals. Each output is individually adjustable for type, sensitivity and time alignment. Technical Specification Audio inputs: 7 x analogue adjustable. 1 x digital optical. 4 x digital coaxial IEC1937, IEC958 – 96kHz MHR capable (Module fitted). Notes on ProductMeridian 861 Reference Digital Surround Processor Version 4 with Room Correction Meridian has established an unequalled reputation for outstanding use of digital audio and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology in our products. The 861, rated Class ‘AAA’ by Stereophile Guide to Home Theater, inherits Meridian’s original Surround DSP pedigree and adds to it significant additional DSP power, a higher degree of control sophistication and outstanding audio and conversion stages. Product/861 Surround Processor The 861’s card-based architecture also brings the potential for handling more than 8 channels and for decoding future surround formats. Of course, 861 makes a perfect front end for the ‘Class A’ rated Meridian Digital Theatre, where the 861 can receive super-high-resolution digital signals in MHR SmartLink format from a Meridian optical disc transport such as the companion 800. Movie sound Dolby Digital (AC-3) is the most common sound format on DVD (and LaserDisc, for which an optional demodulator card is available). The unique Meridian Dolby Digital decoder delivers the highest-quality sound of which this format is capable, and passes the most extreme tests. The 861 also decodes DTS signals from DVD – as well as DTS surround CDs and LaserDiscs. MPEG Surround is another audio format for DVD, satellite broadcasts and computer multimedia, and the MPEG decoder provided in 861 is the best sounding so far. Front view Back view Card view Music formats Meridian’s 861 uses carefully crafted processing to get the maximum benefit from high precision PCM inputs. The 861 accepts multiple input channels of 24-bit, 96kHz sampling PCM, and gives the maximum resolution on these signals. The processor also performs high-resolution up-sampling on signals coming in at lower sampling rates, de-jittering them and significantly improving their audio quality. What makes 861 so special? The single most important feature in all our DSP products – including the 861 – is the incredibly high standard we set for sonic performance. Another differentiating feature is that instead of using chips that have their firmware irrevocably ‘burned into’ them, Meridian’s signal processing is software based, and therefore can be improved or modified in future. For example, Dolby and DTS encoding, and THX specifications have advanced a great deal since the initial standards were set; DVD-Audio also brings new requirements. Meridian’s solution gives the customer exceptional value over the years to come – a Meridian 800 Series system does not go out of date. Most important, however, is the provision of improved sound by fitting a highly accurate, 24-bit decoding algorithm right at the heart of the world’s best sounding surround decoder. Crude solutions – like outboard decoders with six analogue outputs, or multiple plug-in third-party decoder cards – can never remotely approach the sound, function or facilities of the fully-integrated Meridian 861 architecture. AV processor and system controller Now includes Meridian Room Correction for a dramatic improvement in listening room sound CD and Dolby Digital signals upsampled to 24-bit, 96kHz and de-jittered Full compatibility with high-sample rate signals throughout Modular internal construction and card-based structure allows easy addition of new hardware, interfaces and features Full RS232 control, status and trigger outputs Software updateable Rack-mountable option available Rated Class ‘AAA’ by Stereophile Guide to Home Theater The System integration With the profusion of formats that may appear at the inputs of a decoder, there is room for confusion. However, the 861 continually monitors the digital input and automatically loads the correct decoding software for the format, speaker layout and encoding of the incoming signal. This capability is enhanced by MHR SmartLink, which provides a digital link between a Meridian optical disc player and processor, carrying explicit information about the nature of the data stream as well as encrypted high-resolution digital signals from DVD-Audio – the first system of its kind to be approved. You can also store separate user parameters for each source (such as DVD) depending on whether the incoming signal is stereo or surround. THX? Naturally! New THX specifications like Ultra 2 have a huge amount to offer in the multichannel surround replay environment. The 861 has all the signal processing in place to comply with the latest THX requirements. The front channels carry re-equalisation; the surrounds use a timbre-match curve and a sophisticated de-correlation technique. Bass management and protection Movie signals have the potential to require a 12dB increase in bass power handling in a system. Not only can the LFE (Low-Frequency Effects – the ‘0.1’ in ‘5.1’) channel convey 10dB more bass, but potentially this can coincide with full bass level in the other five channels. Although the Dolby Digital, DTS and MPEG encoders limit the total bass level to +15dB, the resulting bass energy can still be incredibly demanding for even the very best systems – and equally important – may be disastrous for other, less capable, speakers. The Meridian 861 incorporates a highly sophisticated series of bass protection schemes for Digital Surround formats. The user can control the overall amount of LFE added in. In addition, the 861 has a bass limiting function (adjusted in Setup) which limits the total amount of bass passed to the system. As well as the overall bass protection, the 861 can monitor all speaker feeds. A sophisticated DSP function determines how hard each individual speaker is working and compares that to a capacity rating measured for each speaker when the system is installed, by means of a calibration routine that actually tests the speaker’s capabilities. If the signal demands more bass than a speaker can supply, a proprietary, psychoacoustically optimised limiting filter momentarily and elegantly reduces the load on that speaker. This unique protection method means you can get the most out of all the speakers in the room without any fear of damage or unpleasant overload noises. “Brilliant in conception, mind-boggling in execution, more powerful and better sounding than almost anything else ever made.” —What Hi-Fi “…the 861 is beyond reproach.…There is no need for discussion, it is simply the best.” —Home Entertainment “A life-changing experience…” —The Absolute Sound “…the best AV technology that money can buy… a benchmark to which all others can be judged.” —Audio & Video Lifestyle “…the most flexible and capable device in audio. …it offers as much insurance against the winds of technological change as is possible. It’s a formidable machine.” —Stereophile Sample rates and de-Jittering The 861 embodies the very latest developments in digital audio, including high sample rate capability throughout and DVD-Audio digital interfacing at up to 192kHz. Meridian, famous for their smooth-sounding digital-audio components, have made a major breakthrough with a memory-based de-jittering system that renders the processor almost entirely immune to input-signal quality – making it by far the sweetest and most open sounding controller that Meridian has built to date. Digital inputs such as Compact Disc and Dolby Digital (if derived from an 800 or 598 with digital outputs) are upsampled to 24-bit, 96kHz sampling and de-jittered by a powerful 150MIPS DSP processor and FIFO memory buffer, while analogue signals are transferred into the digital domain via superb-quality high-sample-rate 24-bit Delta-Sigma A/D converters. 861 Overview The architecture of the 861 allows for wide flexibility – future sources, formats and features can be handled by upgrading software and/or cards. Inputs The 861 is a full-system controller preamp that provides seamless control of up to 12 analogue or digital audio, and up to 12 video, sources. The Tape cards provide additional internal A/D and D/A converters to give full support for both tape recorders and an extensive 2- and 3-zone multiroom capability in analogue or digital formats. By providing digital as well as analogue inputs, the 861 can give radically higher sound quality for sources that are originally digital – like CD, DVD and especially DVD-Audio. As well as accepting multichannel digital audio, the 861 will handle SPDIF-encoded Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG from sources like DVD, Satellite and LaserDisc. Processing The Meridian 861 is a digital processor and all signals are handled within the digital domain. The processing engine can consist of between 2 and 10 modular processor cards, each offering an astonishing 300 MIPS of processing power and housing multiple ultra-fast 48-bit processors with high-speed cache memory. In each DSP core, the incoming signals are processed using a variety of proprietary algorithms and up to a dozen output signals are generated. These signals can be used to feed a number of speaker layouts, ranging from 2- to 9-speaker stereo/surround with multiple subwoofers (with adjustable crossover parameters). The on-board algorithms include Meridian’s own highly transparent Dolby Pro Logic II and Dolby Digital implementations, MPEG Surround, DTS, THX extensions, TV Logic and a variety of award-winning music programs including Trifield and Ambisonics. Room Correction From Version 4 onwards, Meridian’s 861 offers a powerful additional feature: Meridian Room Correction. The Room Correction system employs a special computer program that uses the 861 to measure a room’s resonances with a simple microphone. It then computes digital filters to control the resonances, or “modes”, and uploads them to the 861, where different sets of filters can be associated with different loudspeaker layouts and profiles. The result is a dramatic improvement in the sound of a listening room. Outputs The 861’s outputs can be provided as digital signals to feed Meridian DSP Loudspeakers, or as variable analogue outputs using a proprietary on-board 24-bit resolution D/A conversion method – or as a mixture of both. Video control and OSD The Meridian 861 provides broadcast-grade video switching options for monitors, projectors and video tape routing. The comprehensive setup and customisation facilities allow the user to link any video and audio combination to the 12 sources (accessed from Source switching on the front panel or the remote control). In addition to providing high-quality video switching, the 861 has the ability to give ‘help’ and ‘system control’ feedback information via an On-Screen Display. Video formats supported via optional cards include Composite, S-Video, Component (interlaced and de-interlaced/progressive) and RGB. Standard and optional cards Each 861 – available as a table-top box, or in a rack-mountable version with or without cover – is factory fitted with a backplane that has slots for both digital audio and video cards, a highly sophisticated power supply and a selection of 800 Series cards, the total number of these being dependent on the combination being installed. Notes on ProductMeridian’s G Series line of high performance digital & analogue consumer audio components feature a stylish cabinet design in traditional black or a sleek silver finish. Designed to be either free-standing or rack-mounted, G Series components build on their predecessors, the multi-award-winning 500 and our flagship 800 Series, and include entirely new circuitry developed specifically for the G Series. Multi-layer boards reduce system noise and improve performance. In products which include video capabilities, broadcast-quality, wide-bandwidth video components are employed for maximum image integrity.G Series units are easy to use. Where appropriate, a knob is included to control volume. The positive-action front-panel keys are software-defined: their legends are presented in the vacuum fluorescent display and change intelligently according to context.Full installation configuration of many G Series components is achieved by running a special setup program on a Windows computer, connected to the G Series unit via a serial link, or direct from the front panel.G Series products also include serial ports for remote operation and configuration, along with infra-red sensor input and trigger capabilities, plus Meridian communications ports. A comprehensive back-lit learning/programmable remote is included with products other than amplifiers. Virtually every piece of audio equipment has its own, characteristic sound. But at Meridian, our intention is to represent the original acoustic or studio event as accurately as possible. The characteristic sound of Meridian, therefore, is clear: it’s the real thing. We achieve this sound in many ways, including careful choice of the right components, the right signal processing, the shortest possible analogue chain, precision digital design and the lowest jitter. The G68 builds on the technology that went into Meridian’s flagship, AAA-rated 861 surround processor. It is a powerful, flexible surround controller with an AM/FM tuner built-in, and represents the centrepiece of the G Series range, with multiple variants available to suit a wide range of applications. At the heart of the G68 is a powerful DSP engine consisting of five Motorola 56367s running at 150MHz – delivering an incredible 750MIPS (million instructions per second). Processing is performed at high sample rates and with 48-bit precision throughout, ensuring that all filtering, processing and other operations are carried out far, far above the limits of human hearing. The G68 is thus a perfect processor for the very latest in digital audio and video, such as DVD-Audio and DVD-Video. For superior audio quality, incoming analogue signals are converted to 24-bit, high-sample-rate digital data via multibit Delta-Sigma converters as soon as they enter the processor, and all digital signals are reclocked to minimize jitter and maintain total data integrity...............................................And that’s just one reason it sounds so good. All versions of the G68 include two 6-channel S/PDIF digital inputs (coax), five stereo Toslink optical inputs, and six more stereo coax digital inputs. In addition, there’s a 6-channel analogue input, and five stereo analogue ins. All the inputs are reconfigurable for an incredible degree of flexibility, and analogue inputs are converted to digital at high resolution – 24-bit, 96kHz.The G68 is not only an audio processor – the video versions make it a superb video switcher too, with broadcast-quality switching and signal handling for the highest quality picture you’ve ever seen. There are four S-video inputs and two outputs; four composite inputs and two outputs; and three component inputs with one output. The G68 combines controller and surround processor functions, meeting the latest THX Ultra 2 specifications and including MPEG, DTS, Dolby, Trifield and Ambisonic decoding, to name just a few. The decoders consist exclusively of our own code, giving them superior integration with the Meridian design philosophy, as well as superior performance. The G68’s ‘Smart Source’ feature continually monitors the digital inputs and automatically loads the correct decoding software for the format, speaker layout and encoding of the incoming signal. This capability is enhanced by MHR SmartLink, which provides a digital link between a Meridian optical disc player and processor, carrying explicit information about the nature of the datastream as well as encrypted high-resolution digital signals from DVD-Audio – the first system of its kind to be approved. Virtually all other manufacturers oblige you to go through a D/A-A/D chain, losing quality in the process. You can also store separate user parameters for each source (such as DVD) depending on whether the incoming signal is stereo or surround, so that any source material is played with the decode of your choice. The G68 includes Meridian Room Correction software, accessed via the computer setup program used to configure the unit via the serial port. This unique feature automatically measures room resonances using a simple microphone, employing powerful DSP technology to build up to 60 high-quality digital filters that limit the reverberation time at resonant frequencies to a value similar to the overall reverberation time of the room. The filters can be examined graphically and numerically, and edited if required. The result is that ‘muddiness’ in the sound is removed, while stereo and surround imaging are dramatically improved. Coupled with this is a powerful bass management system that can handle up to three subwoofers.Multi-zone/recording features include stereo digital and analogue outputs providing independent sources to two additional zones (video versions add two sets of S-video and composite video, with auto-switching and conversion between S and composite). The tuner provides AM (LF/MF) and FM (VHF stereo Band II) reception and RDS, and is fitted with its own 24-bit, 96kHz A/D stage. Digital signal processing provides a sophisticated FM stereo blend/width control which allows the user to minimise noise on a received signal. There is also a DSP-based lowpass filter and whistle filter for improved AM reception.Four versions of the G68 are available. The G68D version does not include video I/O, but provides 10 configurable digital and two analogue outputs, plus a multizone/tape audio capability. The G68ADV version includes 10 channels of digital out with MHR along with 8 channels of analogue output. On the video front, there are two S-Video outs, four S-Video ins, two composite outs and four in, plus component out and three component inputs. The included multizone/tape feature adds composite and S-Video capability. The G68AXV replaces the audio outputs described above with six unbalanced and four balanced analogue outputs, while the G68XXV instead provides eight balanced analogue outputs on XLR connectors. The G68 can be configured with a powerful Windows graphical set-up application (supplied), which allows access to all the unit’s functions and configuration. However, the G68 can also be configured from the front panel, thanks to the comprehensive ‘soft-key’ based user interface which is common to all the G Series components. Five of the seven keys take on functionality intelligently according to context, with their legends displayed above the buttons in the front-panel display. As a result, ‘wizards’ can be used to lead you through the configuration procedure, allowing a powerful degree of customization without having to hook up a computer. Further keys take you back to the top level of the interface (‘Home’), and display different options available at a given level (‘More’).The G68’s firmware can be updated via the serial port, and it is possible for the unit’s hardware to be upgraded by a Meridian service centre. This sophisticated, powerful product is difficult to fully describe on paper – contact your Meridian dealer for a demonstration of the G68 and other G Series components, along with Meridian DSP Loudspeakers, which form an ideal complement to them. G68 Surround ControllerG68 Surround ControllerThe G68 Digital Surround Controller is an ideal complement to the G98 DVD Transport, and provides the basis of a stunning Meridian Digital Theatre system. The units are shown here connected to a pair of Meridian’s top-of-the-line DSP8000 speakers for front left and right, coupled with a pair of DSP420 in-walls for the surrounds and a DSP5500HC for the centre front channel. Any kind of video display device can be supported, whether composite, S-Video, Component (progressive or interlaced) or even the latest interfaces such as HDMI or DVI. With the video processor in the G98, different video inputs are converted to all formats, so there is only need for one display connection. In this analogue alternative to the system shown opposite, the G98 and G68 are augmented with the G55 5 x 100W multichannel power amplifier. The amplifier will drive any conventional passive analogue loudspeakers. The available analogue versions of the G68 include both balanced and unbalanced variants and combinations of the two. A digital output version of the G68 without video is also available.Meridian Room Correction software automatically detects room resonances and counteracts them, utilising awesome DSP power to generate up to 60 filters.Output panel for the G68XXV – compare with the G68ADV overleaf.
